I went to look at a three year old geling for sale and ended up comming home with his two year old brother instead. The new horse doesn't  have a name yet but I'm sure he will have one soon. I already clipped him and started teaching him to lunge. As of today he is 14.2 hands....I hope he's not done growing!

I worked with the new horse again last night (still no name) I put him on the lunge line and we started to learn the word "whoa". He really didn't catch on untill the very end. I can also see that he likes going to the right alot more then he does the left so I will have to work him twice as much on is left to make up for that.

I thought I would try the "string test" to see how tall he is going to be. When I leaned down to measure his leg the sucker bit me! I went off on him for about 4 seconds and then called it a night...looks like I got another jerk :-P

I worked some more on teaching the baby horse to "whoa" last night. He's starting to understand what I'm asking of him so tonight I'm going to try longlining him for the first time. I tied him up to the arena while I rode Headlight and the baby did not like that at all and ended up braking the buckle on his halter. So I think we will have ALOT more tying sessions since he has zero tolerance for it.

I rode the baby horse for the first time! I started out jumping on each side of him with his head turned to me untill he didn't care. Then I put my weight in the saddle a couple of times and finally I put my leg up and over him. For a while I just sat there with his head turned towards my shoe to make sure he wasn't going to freak and then I attemped to make him walk.

He caught on fairly quickly and I had him walking circles all around and practiced stopping for a while. I managed to get him into a jog for a few strides and then called it a day.

Monday August 13th 2007

I worked with the baby horse again tonight. When I got home from work I went into the geldings field to bring him in. When I was walking him towards the gate another horse ran up behind him and the baby horse darted to get away...buring the skin on my right hand in the process...Ugh. It stung a little but I held on and regained control.

I started out just bitting him up in the stall since it had been about a week since I've worked with him. After the bitting in the stall I put the baby on the cross ties and for the first time I saddled him in the barn. He took it very well and didn't flinch at all. We walked out to the round pen when I lunged him to get some excess engery out and practiced our "whoa" some more. I've found that he doesn't like to whoa very much. We worked on despooking to the whip for a little bit then I went over to the saddle and started rocking it around and pulling on it. Out of no where the little bugger tried to cow kick me with his back leg! I quickly corrected him and put him to work on the lunge line.

After some hard work on the line I brought him back in and tried to mount again...this time it was a success and we walked around the round pen for a while. He doesn't like the idea of getting kicked and kept turning around to look at my feet...he has ALOT more training left before he will be ready to show next year!

I hope to work  with him every night this week.

Well the last time I got on "bean" he took off bucking and almost got me off. I have gone back to the basics of "whoa" and ground driving him untill Derek is around to hold him for my next couple of rides. He looks as if he grew some and is learning the idea of parking out fairly well.

August 27th 2007

I finally got to work Bean a little more last night. I put my saddle on and did some work on his "whoa" and speed control. I then ground drove him a while to get him understanding what the pulling of the bit means. I wanted to get on him and walk around but Derek wouldn't hold him for me :-(  After our workout I made him stand in the wash rack for the first time and get hosed off. He was very good about it and we called it a night. This horse has alot to learn before he can start showing!

Tuesday Sept. 18, 2007

I finally got to work with Beanie again last night. I tacked him up in the cross ties with no problems and took him to the round pen to lunge. After about 10 mins of work on the lunge line I asked Derek to hold him so I could get on. I bumped on each side and he didn't even flinch so I hoped up on him and made Derek give me a pony ride. Bean did really well and wasn't nasty about it at all. We walked a few circles and troted a couple of steps and called it a good time!

Yes I know its been a whole month without any updates and the reson is because there is no training to update on! I took Headlight to the Grand Nationals and preparing for that and spending the two weeks out in Oklahoma didn't allow any time to work with Bean. This weekend I plan on starting his training again. Poor Beanie!

Dec. 20th 2007

I rode Bean twice this week. Not having an indoor puts me at the mercy of the weather and it sucks!  I've only been doing alot of walking and practicing the halt with Bean since I don't want to hurt his legs. He loves being clipped and is a happy guy. What a great personality!
